Fun in the Sun – Summer Holiday Activities and Sun Safety Tips for Children

Posted by

When the summer holidays arrive and the temperatures soar, many parents find themselves searching for ways to keep children entertained without spending a fortune or hearing the words “I’m bored” every five minutes. Long sunny days are perfect for making special family memories, and with a little creativity, there are plenty of exciting activities that children can enjoy while staying cool, active and safe in the heat.

Nothing says summer fun quite like a garden water day. Children absolutely love cooling off with sprinklers, paddling pools and water balloons. A simple afternoon in the garden can quickly turn into a mini water park with a few inexpensive accessories and lots of imagination. Water pistols, sponge relay races and “fill the bucket” challenges are brilliant for children of all ages and encourage active outdoor play away from screens. For younger children, supervised sensory water play with cups, floating toys and bubbles can provide hours of entertainment.

Summer is also the perfect time for themed garden parties. Transform your outdoor space into a tropical paradise with colourful balloons, paper decorations and picnic-style snacks. Children can dress up in Hawaiian shirts, sunglasses and sun hats while enjoying games, dancing and party food outdoors. A themed afternoon creates a magical experience without needing to travel far from home. Adding party bags filled with summer-themed treats and activities can make the day feel even more special and gives children something fun to take home afterwards.

Creative outdoor activities are another fantastic way to keep children occupied during the school holidays. Pavement chalk art allows little imaginations to run wild, whether they are drawing giant hopscotch games, colourful rainbows or obstacle courses across the patio. Painting stones, making nature collages and building dens in shaded areas of the garden are all brilliant low-cost activities that encourage creativity while making the most of the sunshine.

On extremely hot days, it is important to avoid too much direct sun during the hottest part of the afternoon. Planning activities for the morning or later in the evening can help children stay comfortable while still enjoying outdoor play. Visiting local parks with shaded areas, woodland walks or splash parks can also provide a welcome escape from the heat. Even something as simple as a family picnic beneath a tree can feel like an exciting summer adventure for younger children.

Of course, while summer fun is important, sun safety should always come first. Children’s skin is particularly sensitive to the sun, and too much exposure can quickly lead to sunburn and dehydration. Applying a high-factor sun cream regularly throughout the day is essential, especially after water play. Wide-brimmed hats, lightweight clothing and sunglasses can also help protect children from harmful UV rays. Encouraging regular drinks of water is equally important, as children can easily become dehydrated when running around in hot weather.

Parents should also watch for signs that children may be overheating. Flushed cheeks, tiredness, headaches or dizziness can all indicate that it is time to move into the shade, cool down and rest. Ice lollies, chilled fruit and plenty of breaks indoors can make a huge difference on scorching days. Keeping bedrooms cool at night with closed curtains during the day and open windows in the evening can also help children sleep more comfortably during heatwaves.

The summer holidays are often the moments children remember most vividly as they grow older. Whether it is running through sprinklers in the garden, enjoying a themed party with friends or simply eating ice cream in the sunshine, these small experiences create lasting memories. With a balance of exciting activities, creative play and sensible sun safety, families can enjoy everything that summer has to offer while keeping children happy, healthy and smiling all holiday long.
